Smithsonian Institution Security Design Criteria

The Protection Engineering Group is proud to announce we have recently completed the new Security Design Criteria for The Smithsonian Institution.  The PE Group was selected to develop standardized design and construction documentation for the Smithsonian Institution.  The first major task was to consolidate existing design guidance and criteria as well as develop new criteria to provide a set of comprehensive, multidisciplinary physical and electronic security design criteria to address three (3) facility types and over 300 interior space classifications.  The second major task was to develop a comprehensive set of standard construction specifications for security.  These specifications form the basis for all construction projects involving security, resulting in unparalleled standardization in the implementation of security across approximately 200 facilities.

The new criteria will reduce security vulnerabilities, quantify risk mitigation for priceless artifacts, and provide a safe secure environment for the 32.6 million visitors to Smithsonian facilities each year.
